Power factor (PF) measures how efficiently your facility converts electricity from the grid into useful work. A PF close to 1.0 means most of the drawn power is productive. A PF of 0.7 means a large share is wasted as reactive power.
Inductive loads such as motors, transformers, welders, and older lighting systems are the main reason industrial and commercial sites suffer low power factor. When PF falls below utility limits (TANGEDCO typically expects 0.90 or better), penalty charges appear on the monthly bill.
Automatic Power Factor Correction (APFC) panels continuously monitor PF and switch capacitor banks in steps to keep it near unity. Modern microprocessor controllers respond quickly, improve voltage stability, and reduce cable and transformer losses.
Correct sizing matters. An undersized bank cannot remove penalties, while a poorly designed bank can create resonance with harmonics. A proper study should review load profile, existing capacitors, harmonic levels, and required kVAR capacity.
Durasun Electrics Projects designs and installs APFC panels from small commercial ratings to large industrial banks. Clients typically eliminate PF penalties and achieve about 8–15% improvement in overall electrical efficiency after commissioning.
Every sustained improvement in power factor shows up directly as lower penalties and healthier electrical infrastructure.
